The America’s Plate gourmet pizza competition will be a war between the best. It’s been confirmed that the United States, Italy, Australia and New Zealand will battle it out for who has the best pizza in the world. The prize will be a silver plate the winner hangs in his or her shop, but the real prize will be the bragging rights of having the world’s best pizza. Imagine the marketing possibilities.
The Contenders So Far
Australia will send a four-man team to the New York Pizza Show to compete in the America’s Plate. Regional competitions have been taking place all year. The final will be at the Fine Food Australia show on September 8th. Check out the update on the Australian regionals on page 56.
The New Zealand contenders will be selected through a contest sponsored by “A Touch of Italy” in Auckland, New Zealand.
Enrico Fama, of Pizza & Pasta Magazine, will bring the winner of the 2004 World Pizza Championship Pizza Classica contest. Anniello Falanga from Real Pizza Di Falanga Anniello in Pompei and an instructor at “La scuola Italiana Pizzaioli” (or Italian pizza school) will recreate his world-class pie in New York.
The American contestants so far are 2004 U.S. Pizza Team members, Brynne Humphreys and Chef Keith Yonker. Brynne, general manager of Avalanche Pizza in Athens, Ohio, won Best Pizza in North America at the World Pizza Championship earlier this year, after placing first in North America Pizza Show’s Pizza Pizzazz competition. She will prepare her pizza known as the Godzilla featuring spinach and feta cheese. Chef Keith Yonker was the winner of the Sofo Foods Pizza Championship last fall. He competed as a member of the U.S. Pizza Team and entered a grilled primavera pizza in the World Pizza Championship earlier this year. Keith is the executive chef at four restaurants in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.
Vincenzo Tesauro, the world champion freestyle dough tosser from Italy, will accompany Anniello and Enrico to New York in November. He will perform demonstrations and serve as a judge for the American acrobatic trials. The Italian team will perform a dough workshop during the show. They will talk about the differences in American, Italian and Australian methods. They will teach attendees how to make Italian dough for pizzas as well as for tossing. The American and Australian teams will perform workshops as well.
How It Works
All contenders will meet in a preliminary bake-off on November 2nd. Winners of the best pizza from each country will be decided that day. On November 3rd, the winner from each country will compete in a final pizza showdown. An international panel of judges made up of pizzaoili and celebrities will taste and determine the winner of this year’s America’s Plate competition. The contest takes place at the New York Pizza Show at the Javits Center in New York City. Stay tuned to www.pmq.com.au and www.newyorkpizzashow.com for details. May the best country win.
